Cooker hoods FAQ

Frequently asked questions about cooker hoods.

You’ll find the answers to a wide range of questions below.

What should I do if my cooker hood has no suction or not much suction?

First of all, you need to work out whether it’s an actual hood problem or whether in fact it’s an installation problem, as is often the case. Then check that the metal grease filters are clean, because dirty filters significantly reduce a cooker hood’s suction capacity. If the hood is installed in extractor mode (with a hose that expels air to the outside environment), disconnect the air extractor hose from the hood, switch the hood on and place your hand over the hood outlet to check whether any air comes out. If you can feel air coming out, this means the hood is working properly and that is its maximum suction, so you’ll need to solve the problem by detecting possible installation issues (diameter of hose smaller than diameter of motor outlet, hose too long and with too many bends, internal walls of the hose are not smooth, obstruction in the hose, etc.).

If the hood is installed in filter mode (without a hose to expel air to the outside environment), try removing the activated carbon filters, then switch the hood on and check whether suction is now satisfactory. Activated carbon filters reduce extractor hood performance by up to 30-40%.

My cooker hood is too noisy.

If the noise sounds mechanical, disconnect any hoses connected to the hood and make sure nothing has fallen into the motor and is coming into contact with the fan blades. If the noise does not sound mechanical, disconnect the air outlet pipe from the hood (if it has one switch the hood on and see if the situation has imroved. If it has ou’ll need to solve

If it has, you’ll need to solve the problem by detecting possible installation issues (diameter of hose smaller than diameter of motor outlet, hose too long and with too many bends, internal walls of the hose are not smooth, obstruction in the hose, etc.). If this does not improve the situation, it means that the noise you hear is the hood’s normal operating noise.

If the hood is in filter mode, remove the activated carbon filters and see if this improves the situation. It is normal for noise levels to be higher when activated carbon filters are installed. If this does not improve the situation, it means that the noise you hear is the hood’s normal operating noise.

In the case of hoods built into wall units, the noise is often caused by the hood transmitting vibration to the wall unit. Check with your installer to make sure the product is installed correctly

How should I clean my cooker hood?

Cooker hoods should be cleaned with neutral PH products, lukewarm water and non abrasive sponges.

How often should I change the metal grease filters?

Metal grease filters should be washed at least once a month in hot water and detergent (or in the dishwasher). Grease filters collect grease from cooking fumes, and this grease is highly flammable, so inadequately cleaned filters are a fire hazard. Filters may become discolored after a few washes. This is normal and does not mean they need to be changed.

Drops of moisture are appearing on the underside of my cooker hood and on the filters.

Condensation forms mainly when a hood is installed above an induction hob. This is normal and is not caused by a malfunction. Unlike gas hobs, induction hobs only heat the pans containing the food and not the surrounding air, so the surfaces of the cooker hood stay cold. As the hot cooking vapors rise, they meet the cold surfaces of the hood and release the moisture they contain, which quickly turns into water droplets.

What distance should I leave between my cooker hood and my gas hob?

The installation distance is shown in the instruction book for your cooker hood. Installing it closer than the specified minimum distance, will invalidate the warranty and put users at risk.
